1John 2:9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now.
When we hate someone we judge them harshly, we certainly do not love them, and hope life for them, we want them destroyed out of our life, but is this the “hate” John speak too hear? Hardly, John speak to judgment by laws of the flesh, yes, judgment by laws that these brothers and sisters had been set free from, that is hate, why?
Because none of them were, or are worthy enough, to be judged by the Old Law without being condemned to death by it, these brothers and sisters were under God unmerited kindness, not their own goodness founded upon unrighteous of sin laws, in their members. John make the point saying, ultimately: “why are you returning evil for good done to you?”
Romans 12:17 Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men.
Romans 12:21 Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Yes, why are you giving bad for good, having two set of scales, one for yourself, and one for your brothers and sisters you hate in your heart? Why are you slaughtering your brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, and acting like a Pharisee's while calling it the Royal law of love, and freedom? Freedom from what, judgment, conviction, and death!
Romans 12:9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.
James 3:16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
Here is the real issue of John's letter, the law, just like Paul's letters dealt with, those unrighteous teachers enslaving others to sins laws, judging others under wrath, and hate, while hypocritically letting themselves off in God's love. Yes, this was, and is, the great apostasy, wherein weeds are over-sown into the field of wheat, removing the restraint the apostles of Christ held off by teaching one commandment of love.
James 4:4 You adulterers and adulteresses, don't you know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 4:5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously"? 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."{Proverbs 3:34}
2Cor. 3:16 But whenever one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
Galatians 5:1 Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don't be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
