Is judging your brother by thousand's of organizational religious rules love? Some would kill their brother over a man-made rule of organized religion in the name of God. Yes, this has been practiced for thousand's years since Christ Jesus, it is not new as some would have you believe, that is, their group has the new light of truth, hence, giving their group the right to kill their brothers in the name of God.
Matt.5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor,{Leviticus 19:18} and hate your enemy.{not in the Bible, but see Qumran Manual of Discipline Ix, 21-26}' 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, 5:45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. 5:46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same? 5:47 If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don't even the tax collectors do the same? 5:48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
At the time of Christ the Jew's could not kill their brothers physically or they would have because they were under a world power, the Roman's who's laws would not allow such murdering of brothers. Subsequently, the Jew's disfellowship their brothers from society; losing all human rights as a person dead among them.
Christ Jesus on the other hand, did not take up the laws of Jew's in treating these outcast as evil and dead, but rather showed God's loved, spiritually feeding them with tender compassion. This love, is the love God's speaks too here through the apostle John, who witness first hand this tender compassion of Christ Jesus, which cost Christ his life!
Legal-Christian's today practice this same uncompassionate love defined by rules and laws of their religion, claiming it righteous, while killing those showing kindness like Christ Jesus too ones they have spiritually destroyed by cutting off.
Those murdering Christ did so with a blind zeal, what blinded them, the law? Yes, the righteous laws of God, caused their blindness; when one violated God's righteous laws it required them to enforce it. Christ seemly violated their righteous law by associating with ones they had judged unworthy of life. Hence, they claimed their judgments were righteous because they came from God's righteous law, so how had they misjudged Christ Jesus whom God loved and declared righteous?
They erroneously believed the knew God by scriptures, but they did not because they had self-righteous hate in their heart through judgments of law for their brothers. They did not have the love of God in them, they had judgment of laws in them. Hence, killing the one perfect righteous life that never sinned or broke God's laws.
So John speak in his letter to those loving God by having the love of God in them, the life of Christ Jesus in them, in this way, they would not fall into self-righteous hate of brother through laws, and murder this time the body of Christ Jesus in the name of righteousness.
