Daily Bible Thought > Matt.5:3 - Blessed Are The Poor in Spirit

Matt.5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.{Isaiah 57:15; 66:2}

What does it mean to be poor in spirit? Well there is a spirit of our flesh, and it gets power from self-control, and meeting the things that strengthen the flesh, which is laws of our flesh, but we also have a spirit that connect with God, and what strengthen it, faith! Faith, hope, and love for God. Here Christ speaks too those Jews, real words that they were lacking in spiritual food that nourishes the soul of mankind towards God.

These Jews, many of them were outcast from their own faith, being killed by the laws of the Jew's, disfellowshiped, excommunicated, they were walking dead, having no standing in the Jewish community, they were poor in spirit. Living in a harsh desert of laws providing them no spiritual nourishment towards God, but instead condemnation by the Law of Moses, and thousand's of lesser laws the Pharisee's and scribes had put upon the people.

Here they were hearing real spiritual food from the bread of life, Christ Jesus, Christ was the truth of God for mankind, and the waters of sweet refreshment. Christ was telling them they would be part of his Kingdom that he soon would be entrusted with through his death. Yes, they would be filled with spiritual refreshment, and truth, when the promise Holy Spirit was poured out upon those poor of spirit under the law, and they would be born again, being made part of the living bread, the body of Christ Jesus, where no good thing would be lacking for them in spiritual nourishment.

Yes, blessed are poor is spirit under the ruthless laws of the Jewish leadership, thankfully they were not rich in spirit, like the rich-man in Lazarus parable, thankfully they were poor in spirit suffering in heart for righteousness sake, because soon they would be filled.
