Matt.5:31 "It was also said, 'Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,'{Deuteronomy 24:1} 5:32 but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.
When a legal requirement is given in a rule, commandment, or a law it justifies a fleshly minded person conscience, it clears the slate as to any guilty, but is it righteous according to God's standards of righteousness and holiness?
Well, this is the real question Christ Jesus poses here for those that thought they could put their wives away by writ of divorce, was this writ enough to make a person clean before God? No! I was not, cleanses and righteousness did not come from man and his good efforts and Christ Jesus had just spoke of in committing adultery by lusting for the opposite sex on all accounts Christ took the lawyer's of the Law of Moses and condemned them by the standards they taught made them righteous.
There was no grounds for putting away ones mate but upon sexual immorality; still a legalistic will not get the whole meaning of Christ Jesus words here they will rather see these words as clearing their conscience by legal means. The law gives the fleshly mind a right to kill some one for a mistake the person may have themselves made hundreds of time in their own heart. When we cuts someone off it is a killing of the relationship we take the right by a law and the kill the person to any trust, love, or our affection in association, but is this how Christ Jesus treated those judged by the law as adulterous?
Take a verse or two out of context to justify our hating someone giving us the right by commandment to kill that person in our heart is not what the Sermon on the Mount was about, a person needs to consider all what Christ Jesus did and said and wait upon God to give direction through Holy Spirit before make such serious decision because some verse in the bible says we can!
Matt.5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor,{Leviticus 19:18} and hate your enemy.{not in the Bible, but see Qumran Manual of Discipline Ix, 21-26}' 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you.
