John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 15:14 You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.
What did Christ command us too do? Will, the list is endless if we are honest person, or we can sum-up the perfection of truth by these words:
Romans 13:10 Love doesn't harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.
But lets be honest here, Christ went beyond the law, he didn't just replace it with another list of laws to punish our flesh for sinning, something we cannot do according the God's word the bible. Christ righteousness exceeded that of the Pharisees under the law of the Moses. Whom were made righteous by atonement for their sins by animal blood. It is Christ superior blood, which is the righteousness exceeding the righteousness of the Pharisee's.
Matthew 5:20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. But to have Christ righteous as a Christian's we cannot walk in law and the works they produce, and what works did the law produce? Sin!
Romans 7:8 But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
If we are a sinner, we are not in Christ, we are under the laws of the flesh and its mind, dead to the Christ. However, we cannot, not be a sinner. Hence, than we must be in a sinless life given too us, by God, to be sinless. Now if you go back and read in context the fifteenth chapter of John about the true vine than you will understand its truth.
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.
Romans 8:3 For what the law couldn't do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh;
Which truth profoundly confuses our fleshly mind; the new covenant is love, we must be walking in love, but who love? Not human love, that has failed the human race so badly, but God's love. God's love is found in Christ Jesus, so we must be in Christ, which means we are walking in love. If we are in God's love, Christ, we are sinless in God's eyes. This is the righteousness that exceeded the mundane blood of animal the Pharisee's used to atone for their own sins.
1 John 3:9 Whoever is born of God doesn't commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can't sin, because he is born of God.
1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice{"atoning sacrifice" is from the Greek "hilasmos," an appeasing, propitiating, or the means of appeasement or propitiation--the sacrifice that turns away God's wrath because of our sin.} for our sins.
So in context, Christ was not laying a bunch of commandments up us, because he had done away with works of the law, which produces sin; Christ removed our sin casting them into the very sea far away from us by his righteousness.
Micah.7:18 Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn't retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. 7:19 He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. 7:20 You will give truth to Jacob, and mercy to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.
Rev.1:17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, "Don't be afraid. I am the first and the last, 1:18 and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades{or, Hell}.
So when you here Christian's start enumerating the many works of law under the banner of love, they think Christ put upon us! Please know death was defeated in Christ because he defeated sin, by his righteous life. There are no works of law for Christian's even if they are labeled by the word love. Love does not add judgment, nor does it promote sin, it removes our judgment, hence, our sins in Christ Jesus.
1 John 4:12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.
1 John 4:17 In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world.
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.
