John 3:20 For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn't come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. 3:21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God."
What is evil? Well, for the world it is defined as felonious act against someone, but is this the definition of the bible evil. No! Its not, sin is evil and that is the context of Christ Jesus words here, not a legal definition by religion or State, but God's view where a man lust for a woman had commit evil in his hearts, which is the same as the physical act of adultery.
1 John 5:18 We know that whoever is born of God doesn't sin, but he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn't touch him.
What is the light, the law? Well, the law certain was light of God's righteous correction and judgment for those in the Jewish faith and they came too that light, but Christ is speaking of “the light”, not the light of the law. So who would come to him, those loving truth, what truth? The truth of whom they honestly were at heart, not what they put on in the sight of men, but the secret person of the heart that love God's righteousness, and knowing they could not meet it as a sinner not just proven by the law, but in their hearts and measure themselves against God's righteousness.
Romans 7:21 I find then the law, that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present.
Each of us have a choice in this life, we can pretend, we are not a sinner by judging others worst than we are thinking somehow we are upholding something better than ourselves justifying our own unrighteousness, or we can love truth. What truth? The truth of Christ Jesus as the light, when we compare ourselves against a righteous man whom never sinned we judge ourselves correctly into the light of truth. We see what we stumble over, but we still stumble, we stop justifying our sins by some other evil in our brother or sisters eye thinking as it were: “I am a least not that bad!”
John 11:9 Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
We come to the light that exposes us to the truth of our sinful life, we humble ourselves and thank God for his great kindness and mercy in saving us from our sins. We bless those that curse and bear up walking in love, so we can cover a multitude of sins. No other works cannot be done in God, by the law, or by sins laws that condemns us just as we are sinners, instead we come to the light being made a part of the light so we can love God and have are own judgment put away undeservedly.
1 John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
The only way we are not evil is by having no sin in God's eyes, we cannot in our own goodness or power accomplish something our fallen flesh is part of sin. We must be born anew from sin into a sinless life of the light Christ Jesus.
1 John 2:10 He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him.
1 John 3:9 Whoever is born of God doesn't commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can't sin, because he is born of God.
