1 Peter 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin;
For our flesh to exist and survive on this earth it must obligate others to debt or itself be obligated to debt; debt for payment of friendship, loyalty, family to take care of us, and so on...
Matthew 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn't worthy of me.
This is accepted in our world despite those that would loudly protest otherwise, thinking their love is pure, and without obligating others to them for some sort of reward.
Rom.13:8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
Desisting from sin means suffering in our flesh which can be summed up this way. When we walk in love, love holds no debt of any kind for payment. Thus, we suffer in our flesh when we walk in love, why? Simply put, because love abolishes debt owed us, thus, we cannot get our needs meant in our fleshly so it suffers.
Rom.3:13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. 3:14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth. 3:15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. 3:16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
Those suffering in their flesh in this manner stop sinning because they are in Christ whom holds no debt of payment for their sins in their flesh. They are walking in God's love, found in Christ. In other words, their flesh is of no value at all, they walk by Spirit and must stay in faith to believe God will supply their daily needs by faith.
James 4:13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow let's go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit." 4:14 Whereas you don't know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. 4:15 For you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that." 4:16 But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil. 4:17 To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn't do it, to him it is sin.
Without faith they are using their flesh for payment by obligating others to give them the needs of their flesh. Walking in love takes away the power of the flesh, kills it obligation to flesh, and its desires causing it to rebel and suffer for the things it desires.
James 4:1 Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don't they come from your pleasures that war in your members? 4:2 You lust, and don't have. You kill, covet, and can't obtain. You fight and make war. You don't have, because you don't ask. 4:3 You ask, and don't receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures. 4:4 You adulterers and adulteresses, don't you know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Gal.5:13 For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don't use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another. 5:14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."{Leviticus 19:18} 5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you don't consume one another. 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won't fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Moreover, this is how those suffering in their flesh desist from sin of the flesh. Although, they suffer for wants and needs of the flesh common to all mankind they chose a course of letting go of debts for payment. and needs of the flesh the world uses to build, gain, and survive by. These are suffering for righteousness sake, that is, for the law of the Spirit, love, which makes them of no uses to this world. If the world cannot obligate us in the flesh we are of no uses at all to its system of things. We are thus, not know by this world.
1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.
1 John 3:1 Behold, how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn't know us, because it didn't know him.
1 John 4:5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them.
1 John 4:17 In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world.
