1John 2:1 My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor{Greek Parakleton: Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, and Comfortor.} with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.
John letter lays out the truth of our real condition before our Father YHWH. If we say we have no sin, we are a liar! On the other hand, if we sin we are not in Christ! But here in this verse above John introduces us yet to another truth, God's Holy Spirit, as part of our atoning sacrifice for sin not leading to death.
Titus 3:4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, 3:5 not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 3:6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior;
Such profound truth cannot be known by our fallen flesh, what is said by John under Holy Spirit confuses and confounds our legal mind, that is, our fleshly mind which must think in works of law, and not the grace of God. Sin is missing the mark, but the mark of what? If one cannot qualify for a race he missed the mark of meeting the rules to run. Subsequently, how does one obey the rules if they are disqualified from the gate of the race? What is a rule, it is a commandment that must be obeyed to run the race. To run the race unqualified mean's breaking all the rules, and/or commandments of the race before starting. The effort in running is invain, a useless pursuit that only causes us wrath from the committee that set up the rules to run race.
1 Thessalonians 5:9 For God didn't appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
John 3:36 One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys{The same word can be translated "disobeys" or "disbelieves" in this context.} the Son won't see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."
Romans 4:15 For the law works wrath, for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.
Christ is spirit, no longer flesh, we know Christ no more by his flesh. In fact, flesh disqualifies us from running the race because these brothers and sisters were made part of Christ as his body members, a spirit body, for Christ is spirit, and has a spirit body so they cannot know each other by their flesh either any longer by flesh. Christ made it clear while in his flesh that the flesh is of no value at all, it is the Spirit that he would send them that would comfort, and teach them, and cleanses them from all unrighteousness; sin, for those created by God's Spirit free of sin or the thoughts of sinning God's son's birth by His righteous Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:16 Therefore we know no one after the flesh from now on. Even though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now we know him so no more.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit.
John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 6:63 It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn't have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.
1 Corinthians 15:50 Now I say this, brothers,{The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} that flesh and blood can't inherit the Kingdom of God; neither does corruption inherit incorruption.
Thus, John speaks boldly about our relationship with the Father and the Son Christ Jesus in Spirit, and truth. We are disqualified from the race of life because we are all sinners, we cannot meet the commandments of God, if we are a sinner. Hence, for us to run, we must have someone run the race for us without sin, then if we are made part of his body, spirit, and we are made alive in Christ by God's Spirit we can meet the commandments of God, but why?
1 Corinthians 9:24 Don't you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win.
Rom.8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.{NU omits "who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit"} 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. 8:3 For what the law couldn't do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh;
Because Christ ran and won the race for us; he alone was qualified, he completed the race and was rewarded with the gift of eternal life from the Father. If we are part of him, we have his eternal life indwelling us as the prize Christ won for us. Now having state that, we have set the enter stage for unraveling the truth of John's letter. However, there is a caveat! If we get off that course one step we will be steep into the mire of our fleshly mind that will drags us down into self-qualification, into works of law something not one person could do, or has ever done on earth since Adam sinned. Christ was sent us from above because there was not found a righteous man that could redeem us, meaning without sin on earth. All sinned and fall short of God's glory of eternal life. Christ Jesus is the eternal, the life, and the light, God has freely given us, from his love.
John 1:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
John 3:15 that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Now if we remain in God's love, not in commandment(s) we are in Christ (the gift of Christ life completes the commandments for us), that is right, when John speak of God's love he is saying “Christ”, Christ is God's love towards the human race, if we say we are in Christ, we are saying we are in God's love, if we are cleansed from all unrighteousness, that is, sin, we are in God's love, in Christ freeing us from the judgment of sin. In other words, in context, the commandments of the law were completed for us in Christ righteous life, our being in Christ, that is, in Spirit, ( in God's love) the commandants are completed for us, the same commandments that creating wrath from our sins because we could not complete (the law) because we are sinners, Christ completed for us (the race for eternal life won in Christ as God's free gift of his love too us), then, and only then we have no sin.
Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.
Titus 2:14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.
Jude 1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.
Revelation 2:4 But I have this against you, that you left your first love.
2 John 1:5 Now I beg you, dear lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.
1 John 4:16 We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
We can never stop sinning because we have a body of flesh that cannot and will not stop sinning until its death. That is why Paul was moved by the same Holy Spirit to blurt out that nothing, not one thing good, that is, without sin, righteous, dwelt in his flesh! (God separated the flesh from the spirit for us by his Son's blood) We must just as an Israelite had to do two thousand's of years ago, have innocent blood shed for our sins, for our flesh (sins of our flesh) to be remove, that is, our sins so we are not in violation of God's law/commandments. If God does not provide a provision (passing over) for our sins by blotting them out, paying the price for them we could not even stand righteous in his present. An Israelite did not keep the commandments it was impossible for a sinner to keep the law, that is, the commandments, it was God's mercy that allow God to pass-over their sins.
Romans 3:19 Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.
Romans 2:13 For it isn't the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified
Romans 3:10 As it is written, "There is no one righteous; no, not one.
John 1:36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
Acts 8:32 Now the passage of the Scripture which he was reading was this, "He was led as a sheep to the slaughter. As a lamb before his shearer is silent, so he doesn't open his mouth.
1 Peter 1:19 but with precious blood, as of a faultless and pure lamb, the blood of Christ;
If we forget this truth of our bibles for self-goodness as though we can keep the commandments putting away the filth of our flesh by works of law, and/or works of commandments we invalidate the entire truth God has placed before us to receive his undeserved kindness by his greatest expression of love for mankind his Son Christ Jesus. There is but one commandment that fulfilled the law, there is but one Christ, one Spirit that completes the law for us, which is unequivocally God's greatest act of love in Christ Jesus. Do we understand that simple profound truth? Christ is God's love, in him, we are in God's love this is the new commandment to be in Christ, in Christ is God's love, if we love our brothers we are in God's love, because they are part of us, in the one body of Christ that we are a part of.
Eph.5:29 For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly; 5:30 because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones. 5:31 "For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. The two will become one flesh."{Genesis 2:24} 5:32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly. 5:33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,"{Deuteronomy 21:23}
1 John 4:8 He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love.
1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers.
1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God.
1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. He who doesn't love his brother remains in death.
1 Peter 4:8 And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.
The law of love, which also means the law of Christ, because Christ is God's love, the commandments our completed for us if we are in Christ, that is, by God's love, in God's love. Not one person on earth can put themselves into Christ by demands, and/or their own works, not one person can walk in love, in Christ by self-effort. Not one person can keep God's commandments by their own good effort to obey them. What starts as a free gift, life, finishes with a gift of God's love, by the gift of Christ life too us. If it is a free gift, so why boast as though we did not revived it?
Philippians 2:16 holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn't run in vain nor labor in vain.
Mark 10:19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder,' 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not give false testimony,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and mother.'"{Exodus 20:12-16; Deuteronomy 5:16-20}
James 2:7 Don't they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called? 2:8 However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself,"{Leviticus 19:18} you do well. 2:9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. 2:11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery,"{Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18} also said, "Do not commit murder."{Exodus 10:13; Deuteronomy 5:17} Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 2:12 So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom.
Galatians 6:14 But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
2 Corinthians 12:5 On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in my weaknesses.
1 Corinthians 4:7 For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn't receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
1 Peter 3:21 This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you--not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 7:16 who has been made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an endless life:
Hebrews 9:19 For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people.
1 John 3:23 This is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he commanded.
1 John 4:21 This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.
Now we are cleanse from all unrighteousness, that is, sin and the thought of sin because we have a new mind, the mind of our new body, Christ Jesus, who has conquered death from sin. It is the Holy Spirit in Christ the one temple of God we have come into by Christ righteousness, that is, by are being part of his body that cleanse us from ever dead work of sin. However, there is a sin not leading to our everlasting spiritual death, which is, from our old fleshly mind we are left in on earth which Christ conquerors for us by his mind by the power of his Kingdom in Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 4:20 For the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.
2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in clay vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves.
2 Corinthians 13:4 For he was crucified through weakness, yet he lives through the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we will live with him through the power of God toward you.
Ephesians 1:19 and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might.
1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.
1 John 5:18 We know that whoever is born of God doesn't sin, but he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn't touch him.
