Why doesn't a narcissist ever say goodbye at discard, but rather something like don't contact me anymore?
With a narcissist it takes a little bit of practice but eventually one day the penny will just drop. This is the art of decoding what they actually mean from what they actually say.
So in terms of being on the receiving end of a discard what they like to do is on the one hand successfully ditch current partner but on the other leave the door open just wide enough for them to crawl back through at a later date thus keeping options open. Narcissists do like to have a fall back if needed. ‘Goodbye’ to me has a rather terse ‘its over’ ring to it whereas when someone says ‘don’t contact me again’ the undertone is that they don’t quite mean it. They sure dont!! Not as if they want you to contact them immediately because they are too engrossed with your replacement but a few months down the line would sure give them a mighty ego boost.
As a rule of thumb narcissists prefer to have most ex partners hovering about in the background somewhere. Nice to always have an iron in the fire somehow or another. The irony is that for all they may yell ‘don’t contact, should your circumstances dramatically improve they will normally be the first to pick up the phone. Funny how moving up the social scale pecking order can make them have a change of heart.
Suggest read chapter ‘The Devaluation phase’ in book entitled:
‘Prepare to be tortured. The price you will pay for dating a narcissist’.
